11 months of travel, 4 minutes of video

We’ve been back home for a while now, and are back into an everyday routine. Having both found employment, there are no immediate plans for another multi-month trip, but we do find ourselves constantly looking back on the last year with no regrets and memories which will surely last our lifetime. Its been an amazing journey and we are glad we were able to share all our stories and photos with all of our followers through our blog.

We have compiled some of our experiences backpacking Asia, the Middle East and Europe into a 4 minute video. We hope you enjoy it.

Photo Essay – 10 Spiritual Places in Asia

Asia as a destination offers a kaleidoscope of religions and belief systems for the traveler to experience. There is certainly no shortage of spiritual places usually alive and buzzing with the faithful who arrive in droves to worship. Often some of our best experiences were simply wondering around these unique and inspiring places getting a glimpse into a belief system completely alien from our own sometimes joined by a knowledgeable local who would explain their faith.

The sheer amount of temples, mosques, pagoda’s and shrines throughout the continent is mind blowing but this post highlights the top 10 that we wont soon forget.

Thingyan – Wet and Wild Days

The Buddhists have a strange way of bringing in their new year. While back home we might get dressed up and spend an evening overdosing on champagne or another booze of choice, this part of Asia prefers to dump buckets of ice cold water on anyone brave enough to enter the streets. Of course one day isn’t enough and the giant water fight lasts a total of 3 crazy days.

Lakeside Living

Yet another recommendation from a traveler brought me to Mingalar Inn which upon first inspection, blew me away. After 3 days of hot dusty trekking, not to mention being covered in mice shit, Mingalar became my oasis. The lovely owners greeted me with fresh lime juice and watermelon at the entrance and when I checked the room, decorated in bamboo stalks and traditional Intha hats, I knew i would stay for awhile.

The staff at Golden Lilly were friendly and offered me a spot to go trekking with a group of 4 other tourists the next day. Since I had already had another guide recommendation and wanting a more individual experience I politely declined the offer and set out to find Sam’s Trekking office.

It was a bumpy and bone jarring ride to Mandalay in a van with a seat that continually sent an old man and myself through the frame of the chair with every large bump in the road. He seemed to stay in high spirits continuously smiling a toothless grin, while I began to count down the hours.  I was relieved when I arrived in one piece and immediately checked into A.D. 1 Hotel which was a barain at 5 usd a night. The Location was perfect, set amid a market selling everything from fruits and vegetables to sex toys by locals wearing large bamboo hats with Thanka smudged faces.

One Pagoda, Two Pagoda, Three Pagoda, More!

When I heard the warning from fellow backpackers in Yangon about the long bus trips necessary to get from destination to destination, I feared the worst on my 14 hour overnight journey to Bagan. I think I must have lucked out because the ride was relatively comfortable and routine aside from when I was just dozing off, I was shook awake to have my passport checked at the military checkpoint. Luckily, there was only one.
