What is your favorite kind of treat? I am definitely a moody eater. I can jump from wanting salt and vinegar chips, to a salami sandwich, to brownie cheesecake back to the sourness of candy in one hour. [Read more...]
It’s still comfort food season right?
Beannachtai Na Féile Pádraig
I did want to bake something Irish-esque, but without green food colouring or a shamrock cookie cutter it was a lost cause.
Instead I opted for original Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies, and had my first hand at making cinnamon buns. Definitely won’t be my last time!
Rumors of Double Digits…
Among everything else in Fort Albany, the dogs were covered in white powder this week. I have never heard wind like this in my life, it really makes you feel like you are in the Arctic – I could just imagine the wind originating directly from the North pole and smashing into the side of the building. The wind was so bad during the night it was almost impossible to fall asleep, and was even strong enough to blow open the bedroom window. [Read more...]
Rudolf for Dinner! WARNING GORY IMAGES
Friday was an interesting day as Anna Michelle, one of the teachers in Fort Albany, phoned the ambulance base to let us know there was a presentation for the students on how to dress a Caribou. A local hunter had brought one of many caribou he had shot with a hunting party roughly 3hrs from town. Caribou are only hunted in the winter as it is much easier to track caribou in the snow and the herds can be reached by ski doo. The pics are pretty gory but its important to realize the cultural significance in teaching the younger generation traditional methods of obtaining food as there are very few families left which know how to hunt and prepare wild food. The kids seemed to be very interested in these kinds of presentations which leaves some hope for these skills to be passed on.
Aurora Borealis
Since Lianna has arrived in Fort Albany we have been staying up late in hopes of glimpsing the Northern Lights. Its difficult to predict when sightings occur but usually on a clear night and with some luck you can see them dancing overhead on the Northern Horizon. We missed them a week ago but crossed our fingers that she would get another chance to see these surreal light displays. The Northern Lights are at the heart of many Cree myths and legends with many people believing if you whistle at them you will be carried away to the heavens. Needless to say we got lucky and got to see a moderate display around 11 o clock. Its almost impossible to see them under the lights of the town so you have to be somewhere there is no other light, of course that makes photographing them extremely difficult but i did get this poor quality shot.
Polar Bear in Fort Albany?!?!?

Okay so its not a polar bear but it might as well be! We found this puppy outside of the Fort Albany Grocery store and had to bring it in to play. Unfortunately he has no home and no one to take care of him. This is our dream dog but with long term travel plans in the mix it is not an option for us to take this guy in and it would impossible to leave him behind when we leave. He has a personality of a relaxed golden retriever even though he is still just a pup. The dog already seems to have some tricks down from some of the hospital staff who have been feeding him scraps. It really breaks both of our hearts to leave this dog to its uncertain future being a street dog in Fort Albany so if anyone knows of someone looking for an amazing dog we could make arrangements to get him to you. The Smell of Fresh Baked Bread

It’s always great to be able to create something yourself that you would normally buy off of someone else who made it themselves. When that something happens to be amazing French/Italian style bread and the people that have learned to make it are bread fanatics it has the possibility to change your life forever.
